The major decision means that athletes will no longer have to qualify to compete through national selection events.

Border restrictions delayed its debut by one year, but organisers of the Shaw and Partners Hells Gates 38 believe it has a long future.

The 44 year-old surfski legend added another victory to his name, while Melanie Van Niekerk claimed her first national title.

It was a Spanish double at the Eurochallenge in Villajoyosa, with Walter Bouzan and Chloe Bunnett claiming victory.
